In today’s digital world, your online presence is more than just a website—it’s the foundation of how potential clients discover, connect with, and trust your business. Whether you’re a seasoned entrepreneur or just starting out, having a strong online presence is essential to stand out in a crowded marketplace. From creating a welcoming website to showing up consistently on social media, your digital presence can act as a powerful magnet, drawing the right clients to your business.
This article dives into practical strategies to help you build an authentic, effective online presence that reflects your values, engages your audience, and drives growth. Ready to turn your website and social media into tools that work for you? Let’s get started!

When I was a kid my parents had a small business, but back in 1988 the world was just beginning to go digital, and nobody we knew had a website. Looking back I can recall them giving out business cards, and making connections with the people they met in real life. I think most of their clients found them because they had a piece of a software that was needed by these companies. Even today I still don’t totally understand what they were selling! My mom used to give me $0.05 to “copy paste” their program onto a floppy disk.
In today’s world, a VERY digital place, your online presence is like a warm smile that welcomes people into your business, the porch to sit on and get to know one another, a business card for people across the country, and even the world! It’s very often the first impression potential clients have—and it definitely matters. By leaning into who you are, and what you are offering, you can create that inviting, authentic presence that helps bring your dream clients to you.
Here’s the good news: building a strong online presence doesn’t have to be complicated. With a little care and consistency, your online presence can become a powerful tool that not only reflects the heart of your business but also helps you connect with more clients who need exactly what you offer. However, creating that inviting, authentic presence can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when you’re wearing all the hats of a small business owner, have no website design experience, and know what you don’t like, but aren’t totally sure what you do like. Please remember that with each of these suggestions, support and outsourcing are available, you do not, and should not, be doing it all! If you are the only one supporting your business it’s sort of like being the only person available for CPR, at some point you’ll need to tap out.
Let’s Start with Your Website: Your Digital Porch!
Think of your website as the home base for your business—a cozy place where potential clients can learn who you are and how you can help them. Like attracts like, and by creating this authentic space your people will be pulled to you. To create a strong foundation:
* Keep it simple and welcoming. Clear navigation and warm, friendly copy can make visitors feel right at home. Nobody needs 12 pages, let’s make this Google maps easy, and not like reading an old paper map.
* Show your personality. Share your story, your values, and what makes your business special. What’s your favorite color? Food? Show? People want to know WHO they are working with and trusting.
* Make it easy to connect. Whether it’s a “Contact Us” button or a booking form, clear calls-to-action guide visitors to take the next step. Always double check this actually works, so often THIS is the broken link on a website.
Consistency on Social Media
Social media is like the friendly neighbor who always waves hello—it’s how you stay visible and top of mind. The people we talk to everyday know us best, and feel most comfortable with us. I recall visiting my grandparents as a child, I’d see them maybe 1 or 2 times a year, they were strangers. I was NOT comfortable, nor did I know them. If you show up consistently it naturally builds trust with your followers. Pick one or two platforms where your clients are most active (and if you don’t know, pick the one YOU like best) and focus on:
* Posting regularly. Consistency builds trust and keeps your audience engaged. The algorithm likes it when you show up when people expect you to. If Tuesday is your day, commit to posting every Tuesday and work your way up to more.
* Sharing authentically. Behind-the-scenes glimpses, client stories, and your own experiences resonate deeply. What’s happening in your world today, people are curious. What posts/conversations are sparking your interest?
* Engaging with others. Respond to comments, ask questions, and join conversations to build meaningful connections. People want to be seen, so see your people, hold space for them and nurture those questions and comments.
Prioritize Quality Over Quantity
It’s easy to feel like you have to do it all—post every day, be on every platform, create endless content—but the truth is, less is frequently more. Focus your efforts on creating authentic content that aligns with your values and speaks directly to your ideal clients. A single heartfelt post can be more impactful than a dozen rushed ones, trust me we are all scrolling right past the ho-hum calls to action.
Show Up Authentically
Your online presence is an extension of you, it allows people from all around the world to meet you and your business. Your clients will be drawn to your genuine self. Don’t worry about being perfect—show up as you are, imperfections and all. People appreciate realness, and it’s often what sets you apart in a sea of sameness. Some of my favorite people and I have bonded over losing our moms, eating disorders, divorce, and other “messy” topics.
