Business Doula, the birth story

What do floppy disks, customer service, and a calling have in common?

It took me 30 years to figure it out but looking back, the signs were always there.

Meghan, the Business Doula helping her parent's small business grow

1990, what a time to be alive! I was practically raised on a computer with 2 parents who were software programmers. By age 5 I was making a solid $0.05/DISC to copy their program- not a bad deal! I saw everyday how hard my parents worked, completing every step of the process themselves.

Mom took the orders, packed and shipped the orders, did the customer service, handled any returns. It’s still unclear the role my Dad played- but he sure always looked busy.

Entrepreneurship was not really on my radar, which is funny because I was a successful nanny/petsitter throughout college, but the little bird in my ear (my sweet mother) always encouraged me to go “find a real job”- she longed to see my climb some corporate ladder (YUCK!)

In 2018, freshly divorced and renting a room in my friends house, I came across an email that would change the trajectory of my life- my acupuncturist needed a virtual assistant. This aspect of my business grew fast and soon I was working full-time with clients across the US providing customer service to their clients- a dream come true- working from home, dogs at my feet, providing immaculate loving support to their clients and customers.

As the years went on, this business has grown and evolved, and new offers have started to grow. I’ve been called a coach, but it always gave me the ICK. Coaches are the people who tell kids how to play sports, they know more, they are bossy. I do NOT jive with that word…but doula…ooo, that’s it! It’s gentle, it’s loving, it’s the person you trust to care for YOU in the most tender of moments. Now THIS is a word that felt aligned with what I wanted to offer.

No matter which of my charts or astrology you pull up, I’m a helper/nurturer/caretaker…I always knew I wanted to help people feel safe while doing brave things, whether it was walking a friend through a breakup, helping someone start a project, or just being the one in your corner who says “you’ve got this,” I’ve often been the soft place to land when things got hard.

Now, I get help entrepreneurs through the vulnerable, powerful, gritty moments of growth.

Birth doesn’t just happen in hospitals, or at home, or in centers, or with children. It happens in the creative process, in career pivots, in scaling, in letting go.

And I believe you deserve support through that.

If any part of this story feels like yours too I’d love to invite you to join me for a live conversation about what it really means to grow a business with support.

Let’s talk about the messy middle, the identity shifts, and why you don’t have to hold it all alone.
